Robert L. Barchi, M.D., Ph.D. is the fourth President of Thomas Jefferson University which, along with its hospitals, is dedicated to health sciences education and research.  Upon his arrival in 2004, Jefferson embarked on an ambitious strategic plan to secure its place at the forefront of medical education and research.  Dr. Barchi is responsible for Jefferson’s transformation into a vibrant university campus with the addition of the Dorrance H. Hamilton Building which is located at the heart of Jefferson’s academic precinct and represents a new paradigm in healthcare education.  This educational facility was designed to promote a team-based model for doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals, and scientists.  The Sidney and Ethel Lubert Plaza, a 60,000 square foot college green, provides a place for informal learning and interaction between students, faculty, and staff, and between Jefferson’s academic community and the neighborhood surrounding its campus.

Prior to Jefferson, Dr. Barchi was Provost of the University of Pennsylvania, the chief academic officer of the University with oversight of Penn’s 12 schools.  He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Georgetown University, and Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Barchi is the author of more than 150 articles and three books in the field of Neurology.  He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.

Our discussion will take place Friday February 5, 2010 in the Lincoln Memorial Room at the Union League, which is located at Broad & Sansom Streets in Center City. A light breakfast will be available beginning at 7:30 AM with our discussion starting at 8:00 AM and ending promptly at 9:00 AM. The event is free to Sponsors, Patrons, and PBC Members.
